What is HIIT?
If you have been following along lately, you may have see me posting about the latest fitness program I'm doing - 22 Minute Hard Corps. You may also have seen me mention this word, more than once "HIIT". So...what the HECK is it?
HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training and is a training technique in which you give one hundred percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. This type of exercise gets your heat rate up fast and also burns more fat in less time.
Benefits to this form of exercise include:
- Increased Metabolism: Combing high intensity with interval training results speeds your metabolic rate which translates into a metabolism boost for up to 48 hours after a complete HIIT routine. This means you’ll still be burning fat even after you've finished your workout.
- Quick And Convenient: HIIT workouts are usually 30 minutes or less and can be done anywhere. IDEAL for the type of programs I do. 22 Minute Hard Corps is 22 minutes per workout and very HIIT based, as well as several other new workouts offered viaBeachbody On Demand.
- No Equipment Necessary: HIIT workouts generally use only your body weight, since the focus is on getting your heart rate up and keeping it there.
As always, you won't see the benefits of this kind of program unless you nutrition is in line! I recommend clean eating and limited alcohol and sugar. Planning out your meals and drinking lots of water are ways to make sure you stay on track!
