As we move into the end of January I've been doing some thinking about my own goals, and what really drives success. Have you ever noticed that things just always seem to work out for some people? They just always seem to get their goals? Is it luck, or could it be something else? I find this subject endlessly fascinating, and thought I'd share some of the key answers that I've found through my online forays into this topic:
- Focus: The ability to laser in on goals and tasks is a key trait of successful people. This is all the more impressive in today's world of constant distraction. This is something I've really been trying to work on lately. Can I get an 'YES' from all the mom's out there who feel their ability to focus has plummeted after having kids?
- Strong Willpower: It turns out that willpower is a muscle much like other muscles in your body. It has to be used constantly to be strong. How to build that willpower muscle? Take on a difficult challenge, something that is going to be tough to do. It could be giving up sugar, completing one workout a day, or even learning a new skill. If you find yourself wanting to give up or quit, DON'T! Make a plan for how you will deal with these thoughts when they occur. In the beginning it is very hard, but will get easier as time goes on!
- Believe You Are Good, Better AND Best: We can believe that we have the ability to reach out goals, but it's also important to believe we have the ability to get there. Many people believe that intelligence, our personality, and our physical aptitudes are fixed — that no matter what we do, we won't improve. As a result, we focus on goals that are all about proving ourselves, rather than developing and acquiring new skills. Getting into a growth mindsetis what truly leads to success!
- Be A Giver: Successful people are generous. They know that their thoughts create their world, and the more they give, the more they will get back in return. One of my favorite theories on leadership is that of "servant leadership". When you come from a genuine place of generosity and caring about others, then positivity will assuredly be not far behind.
I hope these tips give you some insights into your own successes and attempts to reach your goals - maybe some of them new for 2016. Perhaps it has also highlighted some things that you are failing to do currently. In the end, remember that success lies within YOU. I truly believe that you can do what you set your mind to, it's just a matter of mindset, determination and willingness to change.
